What Is a Custom Kitchen?
Do the words “custom kitchen” scare you? They scare most homeowners — especially those who don’t want to spend an arm and leg remodeling a few features.
Whether you’re looking for new cabinets or a top-to-bottom overhaul of your current kitchen, the word “custom” shouldn’t be taken to mean “high price tag.”
So, what is a custom kitchen? Simply put, it’s a kitchen designed specifically for you.
Do you have a passion for baking delicious treats for your friends, family, and coworkers? Maybe your current kitchen doesn’t have enough storage space for all of your appliances. Perhaps you find yourself moving back and forth between the pantry and an inconveniently placed refrigerator whenever you want to try a new recipe.
Do you have young children? They’ll be eating everything in the fridge and pantry before you know it, and you don’t want to find yourself needing more cabinet space while you’re trying to raise a family.
Are you going to be retiring and spending your golden years in your current home? You should give some consideration as to whether or not your kitchen will be accessible 10 years down the road.
The list goes on and on, but the underlying theme is the same — a custom kitchen is one that’s tailored to you, your lifestyle, and your needs.
What to Consider as You Design Your New Kitchen
It’s important to know what you’re willing to spend before you start designing custom kitchen cabinets or an entirely new kitchen. Instead of coming up with a single number that you simply can’t go over, we recommend determining a range in which you’re comfortable. This allows you to consider different options and enjoy more flexibility as your project progresses.
We recommend thinking about features or upgrades that you’ve always wanted and adding them to a splurge list. As you can gather from the name, this list includes everything you’d put in your new kitchen if your budget weren’t an issue. We’ll do our best to help you get everything you’ve always wanted while staying within your ideal price range
Whether you’re looking to give your kitchen a minor refresh or you’re overhauling the entire space with a new design, investing in custom kitchen cabinets is without a doubt the easiest way to give the entire space a new look. First and foremost, they’re incredibly versatile and can act as a bold focal point or an accent, depending on what you’d like to do with your overall kitchen design. Even if you’re simply updating your cabinets and nothing else, custom kitchen cabinets can significantly improve your workflow and add functionality you won’t believe you lived without. Just reach out to us if you would like to get started with a kitchen cabinet quote!
Every kitchen has three main work areas: the cooking space (stove and oven), sink, and refrigerator. These elements comprise what’s known as the kitchen triangle. Think about the last time you cooked a meal — how often did you bounce back and forth between these three locations? We’re willing to bet the answer is something in the ballpark of “quite a bit.”
Given that these three areas are used so frequently, you would expect that every kitchen would be designed with the kitchen triangle in mind. But that’s not always the case, especially given that many Bucks County homes were designed decades ago. In many cases, cabinet doors block work aisles when open, refrigerators are found in isolated corners, and any more than one cook in the kitchen becomes a crowd.
At River Woodcraft, we take our clients’ needs seriously and will help you design a kitchen that takes your specific needs into account. The result? A fully functional kitchen that brings you a level of convenience you never thought possible.
It doesn’t matter how well your kitchen is designed if you can’t see what you’re doing! Take a moment to think about the lighting in your kitchen — where could you use more of it? You might not always use your kitchen island when preparing a meal, so consider adding under-cabinet lighting to make food preparation easier and safer. Are you adding a kitchen island or bartop seating? Speak to one of our kitchen design experts about adding pendant lights to your design. They’re as beautiful and elegant as they are functional!
Efficient design and beautiful kitchen cabinets are both excellent additions to any home, but you can’t forget about furniture for the rest of the home. Maybe you need a new dining room table that acts as an extension of your new kitchen, or perhaps you’d like to add custom cabinets in the hall that create a more cohesive theme throughout your home. No matter what your needs are, we can provide you with custom furniture that you’ll cherish for years to come.

Our Kitchen Design Process
1. The Vision
It might sound contradictory at first, but your kitchen design project isn’t really about your kitchen — it’s about you.
At River Woodcraft, we provide all of our clients with free initial consultations over the phone or in person. We’ll take the time to get to know you, your goals, and your vision for what the end result will look like. Many of our clients are inspired by custom cabinets and kitchen designs they find on sites like Houzz and Pinterest, and we always recommend bringing these designs to your in-person appointment or sending them to us via email if we’ll be speaking over the phone. We also recommend looking through the different pages on our website to see the designs we’ve done for previous clients!
If you’re located in Bucks County or the surrounding areas, we can come to you and take measurements of your kitchen and discuss what you’re looking for in more detail..
2. Initial Design and Budget Consultation
Once we know your vision and desired features, we’ll begin working on the initial designs and provide you with a rough estimate of what the project will cost. We’ll review everything we discussed in the initial consultation and make recommendations based on your needs. For instance, larger custom cabinets with more storage space or a unique finish could be just what you’ve been missing!
We’re happy to provide you with more in-depth information for a retainer. This allows us to devote more time to your project and provide you with a more detailed proposal. We’ll put the retainer toward your initial deposit once you’re ready to move forward with your project.
3. Final 3D Design Rendering and Proposal Review
There are a number of custom cabinet and kitchen design companies in Bucks County, but it’s the one-on-one dedication that sets our team apart from the competition. No matter the size of your project, we provide each and every client with a high level of personalized care from start to finish. We’ll make any requested changes to your design before we begin ordering and fabricating your new kitchen.
4. Ordering, Scheduling, and Fabrication
We’ll get to work on your custom kitchen once you sign the contract and we receive your deposit. We take time to ensure that we’ve ordered the correct parts and finishes we need to complete your project on time. You can expect to receive periodic calls and updates from the River Woodcraft team regarding scheduling, delivery, and installation.
5. Inspection and Delivery
If you’ve ever purchased furniture from a big-box retailer, then you’ve probably had at least one issue with quality. Many companies don’t pay much attention to their products after making a sale and will deliver damaged and/or defective items without a second glance, but River Woodcraft does things differently. We take the time to thoroughly inspect each and every product we create before it’s delivered, ensuring that you’re getting nothing but the absolute best. Your remaining deposit will be due upon delivery and we will take “after” pictures with your permission.
6. Large Projects and Exceptions
River Woodcraft can handle the installation portion of most kitchen design projects. However, each project is different, and we may recommend outsourcing the installation if your project includes renovations that are beyond our expertise. We keep your interests in mind and have access to the best teams and contractors in the area for projects requiring electric, plumbing, flooring, and/or tile work. Anyone outside of our company who we recommend is simply an extension of the level of care and service you expect from the River Woodcraft team.
